After ten years in the instrumental ensemble Balmorhea, RG Lowe is releasing his first solo LP, Slow Time. The record, while incorporating elements from pop and rock, looks back on the warmth and spiritual ecstasy of early R&B through the disjunctive lens of contemporary life. Lowe, who plays keys, guitar, and provides the vocals on Slow Time, wrote and arranged about forty songs from 2014 to 2015 at his studio in Austin, TX, where he resides.  Boiled down to 10 and recorded in Philadelphia, the resulting tracks reflect a transitional period in the artist's life as he discovered a new musical language and vocabulary.

What is perhaps most shocking about Slow Time is that Lowe’s voice, which he eschewed for eight years in his work with Balmorhea, is the central star of this project. It’s hard to believe this is the first time we’re hearing it.

In some ways it was really kind of a pop music 101 thing that I was going through, starting with a heavy deep Graceland phase, traveling thru Fleetwood Mac territory, and rounding out with a solid obsession with Prince and Michael Jackson. Hardly any of the songs that I wrote in the Paul Simon phase made it onto the record, perhaps ..

RG Lows is picked as one of Tribeza's 2017 "Musicians To Watch"

To say that Rob Lowe’s latest venture is a departure from his previous work is the most obvious of observations: a veteran instrumentalist by way of Balmorhea (a beloved Austin indie staple), his new project, RG Lowe, takes this musician down an entirely different path: pop. “It’s 180 degrees different,” he says. “Balmorhea is all instrumental, and a lot of it is very quiet and somber and direct ...
